Overview

About Fragments Within Story Website

Fragments Within is a transmedia extension of the game, designed to enrich its narrative depth and provide players with an immersive backstory experience. The project blurs the line between fiction and reality by breaking the fourth wall, offering exclusive access to the game’s art book as part of the unfolding investigation.

  • Transmedia Storytelling: Expands the game’s universe with a compelling backstory, deepening the narrative experience

  • Exclusive Art Book Access: Unlocks a curated art book of the game’s visuals, accessible as players progress through the interactive website.

Challenge

The primary challenge was designing a website that convincingly emulates the look and feel of elegant, classified paper documents, while maintaining intuitive digital interactivity. Striking the right balance between authenticity in visual design and seamless user experience required meticulous attention to typography, layout, and textures.

Solution

The approach focused on creating an immersive, document-like experience where each page feels like a standalone, classified file from an FBI archive. By limiting interaction to single-screen “pages” in black-and-white, similar to photocopied files, the design captures an authentic, confidential atmosphere that reinforces the narrative.

  • Page-by-Page Navigation: Each screen is an isolated “document,” avoiding scrolling to enhance immersion and simulate individual, printed sheets

  • Monochrome Aesthetic: Black-and-white visuals replicate the look of xeroxed, high-security documents from an FBI office, amplifying the classified feel

  • Focused, Minimal Interactivity: The simplified interface, with limited navigation buttons, keeps the user fully engaged in the storyline without distractions

The user-focused approach guided the entire process, ensuring the design met user expectations

"What you see is what you get" — Bill Atkinson

This guiding principle, conceived by Bill Atkinson, the creator of Apple’s first graphical interface, emphasized that black elements on the screen should feel as tangible as ink on paper. The philosophy inspires this project’s commitment to authenticity, where each visual element feels as if it’s been imprinted on a real document, blurring the line between screen and print.

Overview

User Interface Design

The user interface in Fragments Within is meticulously crafted to evoke the experience of navigating a confidential archive, reminiscent of a microfilm reader. Transitions are designed to simulate the distinct scrolling and flicking movements characteristic of viewing microfilm, enhancing the user’s sense of immersion in a world of classified documents.

Key UI Elements

  • Navigation Buttons – Minimalistic, with smooth yet intentional transitions that emphasize document navigation

  • Document Headers – Bold, clear headers signal the start of each section, grounding the user in the context of each page

  • Timestamp and System Labels – Small, realistic details like flicking timestamps add layers of immersion and authenticity

Each element harmonizes to deliver a seamless, purpose-driven browsing experience rooted in realism and clarity
